ICT Classes

So, I got in a pinch last week (or the week before, I don’t remember) and started using my site to distribute class work. So if you are an ICT student looking for classwork downloads, please click on the pretty pink button on the right that says “ICT”.

For the rest of my readers who aren’t my students, promise I’m going to get back to this soon and post some stuff readable.

12 hour days and 3 day weekends

Sorry for the lapse in promised posts, but work has been a title wave of new responsibilities and I’ve been pretty busy. Monday through Thursday starts at 5:30am when I get up and get ready as quietly as possible (as not to wake Elizabeth) so I can get out the door in time to catch the 6:45 but that goes out to the school. After arriving at the campus at 7:40 my day begins. Most days I have a class at 8:00, so I’ve got very limited time to put on a pot of coffee and get my lesson together. Oh yeah, I moved my coffee pot to my desk at work. Elizabeth said that the smell woke her up in the morning. I was debating moving it anyway since I’d rather make coffee all day than just have one cup in the morning. The disadvantage is that I arrive at the office at 7:40 having a class in 20 minutes and haven’t had any coffee. Enough about coffee.

My classes are going well. The material is new to me and so I’ve been learning as I go. It’s a combination of business and using M$ office 2003 (two things I’ve ignored thus far) and so the first weeks have been spent mostly on class preparation. But once I had almost got classes underway, this week our computer problems started to flare up. It’s good to be working on computers again, but I’m looking at problems that I haven’t dealt with in the past or stuff I don’t know how to fix, so needless to say I’m learning a lot.

In other news, Elizabeth’s parents are moving to New York City! Perhaps some of you don’t know Elizabeth’s parents, but right now they live in Palatka, Florida and so it’s a big shift. In the last few years, every time I hear about them they’ve been to New York and so I know they love the city and I think they’ll be very happy there. For me it’s a big bonus because when I go back to the States, I get to visit NYC! To those still in Palatka, don’t fret too much, I’m still planning on getting to Florida so I’m still hoping to see you this summer.

I really want to have more to talk about but seriously, leaving the house at 6:30ish and getting home at 6:30ish makes my (work)days seems seriously long! I know I’ve only been working for 2 weeks but it already seems like years. I guess at this point I should talk about the “full-time job”.

I consider myself fairly blessed that for most of my adult life I have not had a full-time job. When I’m not working for the man, I’ve been teaching English or homeless. It’s been rough at times but there’s something pretty great about having no set schedule from day to day. But there’s something I’ve learned about myself in the past year or so, and that’s that I like a set schedule. I like routine. I like structure (to some extent). And so that’s why I was so exited about this job. Don’t get me wrong, it’s going to take some getting used to but at some point last year I just felt like I wasn’t earning my keep. To be in a position where I get to go to an office and do a lot of work makes me feel more … how should I say? … justified. Maybe it’s guilt (that everyone else I know has to work 40 hours in a real job) or maybe there’s just something in myself that needs to be applied somewhere. But whatever it is I like the tough situation I’m in.
